Helene M., of West Seneca, turned 100 years old today and Meals on Wheels for WNY was honored to help her celebrate!
Staff and volunteers brought her meals by today with an extra treat – cake, a card, balloons and a gift picked out just for her. The avid knitter had requested yarn or chocolates through her daughter, and got some of both. She exclaimed over the beautiful bright blue yarn – which she could see even though she is mostly blind – and started planning a bunch of new hats in the color.
One reporter asked Helene about the secret to turning 100 and living a healthy life, and she noted that she has “a glass of coffee a day, a glass of red wine and, of course, her delicious, healthy Meals on Wheels.”
When asked how it felt to be 100 and if it was exciting, Helene replied that it is “the best thing in the world. I’m so lucky and who wouldn’t want to be in exactly the same position.”
Over the weekend, Helene’s family threw her a party and she had nearly 100 guests, including people from Canada and other states. She even got a call from a friend as far away from Hawaii.
Helene was very excited to be turning 100 and touched that everyone wanted to celebrate with her!
