DURING STORMS, USE FOOD IN PROPER ORDER

MOWforWNYcolor-ICON_1Is a blizzard coming your way?  If you are worried about a long storm during which you may not be able to get to the store, or where the power may go out, make sure you eat your food in the proper order.

  • Fridge – eat any fresh items from the fridge first.  These items have the shortest shelf-life of all of the foods that you have on hand.
  • Freezer – eat the food in your freezer second.  These items have the second shortest shelf-life of all the foods that you have on hand.  If the power goes out, these items also may not be safe to store after the storm is over, so there is no sense having them go to waste.
  • Pantry – eat the canned and dry goods from your pantry third.

If you (or your loved one) is a client of Meals on Wheels and you are worried about having adequate nutrition in the event of a storm please contact our Meals on Wheels Nutrition team to learn more about our “blizzard boxes.”
