HOW TO PREPARE A BASIC EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT

Winter weather is approaching and we all need to be prepared for emergencies and inclement weather.  Before an emergency occurs, take a few minutes to make sure that you and your loved ones are prepared.  Ensure that you have at least a three day supply of food on hand. Select non-perishable foods that will not make you overly thirsty.  Ensure you have one gallon of water per person per day.

In addition, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends the following items as part of an emergency supply kit:
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Manual can opener
• Pet food
• Moist towelettes
• Garbage bags
• Cell phone with (solar) charger

To prepare for more extreme emergencies you may also wish to have a hand crank or battery powered radio, dust mask, plastic sheeting, duct tape and other supplies that will enable you to “shelter in place.”
